Board and Friends Support Summer Learning - and Fun!
September 2010
This summer, the generosity of EducationWorks’ supporters provided nearly $20,000 in scholarships for 133 students to attend summer camp in Philadelphia and Trenton. The Board of Trustees of EducationWorks held the “Champions for Children” friendraiser in June at the Capital Grille in Philadelphia. Board members invited guests to learn about EducationWorks and our impact on the community.
The audience also had an opportunity to meet and listen to EW grandparent Ms. Elizabeth Robinson, EW student Evan Riddick, and EW parent Ms. Conchetta Logan.
Ms. Robinson, a grandmother of four boys and one girl attending EducationWorks afterschool programs at Steel Elementary School, told the crowd that EW taught her grandchildren to focus on education, learning, and good behavior. She credited one grandson’s placement on the honor roll to the EW program, saying “he has made so much progress since he started in EducationWorks.” She also said she now expects every one of them to attend college in the future.
Other speakers included Former Governor Mark Schweiker, who inspired the crowd of supporters, stating the need for summer programming as “kids are learning and acquiring reading and math skills at appropriate rates and it’s happening on a big scale.” He showed support for EW’s programs and summer camps, finishing with a “guarantee that you will realize support for education is the best investment that time and treasure could ever make.”
